The Improv World is coming to VTS from October 14 – 20 when we will be playing host to the International TheatreSports Institute (iTi) Conference and Festival. The iTi is the largest improv network in the world. Every two years they convene a conference and improv festival that brings together improvisers from around the globe. The theme of this year’s festival is ImproV Ecology in recognition of how the improv art form has evolved around the world to reflect the influences it receives from different cultural terroirs. The Festival showcases improv formats created by iTi founder Keith Johnstone (e.g. Theatresports™, Gorilla Theatre™, Maestro Impro™ and The Life Game™), along with signature performances by some of the visiting international delegates and companies. All shows will take place on Granville Island. In addition to our own theatre, The Improv Centre, we will also be performing at the Waterfront Theatre and at the Nest Studio Theatre - all three venues are only a short walk apart from each other.

Completely transforming the player underneath, these characters are bursting to express themselves. Not like regular improvisers, Masks are expressive creatures in their own right. They love to explore, forge relationships and embark upon adventures – always in their own way!
In Masks Unleashed Impro directors attempt to wrangle the impulses and imaginations of masked Impro players and build them into a story. A genre and initial challenge send them into the drama. The Masks follow the tale through trials and tribulations and come through the fire with a new feeling for the world of the stories and this world too.
Or they might just sabotage the entire plan. Sit back and enjoy the raw spontaneity and honesty of this radical form of Impro.
This is a festival seating performance - the seats are on a first come, first serve basis when you arrive at the theatre.
For The Late Show performances, doors open 5-10 minutes prior to the performance.
